Yoga for Back Care • With Deborah Wolk
It has been said that most students embarking on a yoga practice do so due to back pain or other back problems. Yet although yoga addresses many aspects of the body and mind not all styles address musculoskeletal issues in a way that is helpful for those suffering from acute or chronic back pain or those with misalignments. In this 2-day workshop, Deborah Wolk, Co-Director of Yoga Union Center for Backcare and Scoliosis in New York City, will teach a direct approach to relief from all types of chronic back pain and alignment issues such as disc herniation, spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, swayback, whiplash and kyphosis. Yoga, practiced with a specific focus can be the key to alleviating pain and creating more balance in the body.
SATURDAY’S PROGRAM WILL INCLUDE:
• The anatomy of the spine-understanding how it supports us and where its weaknesses are
• Anatomy of disk diseases, sciatica, osteoporosis and other ailments & injuries
• Understanding chronic and acute pain. Separating strong sensation from pain.
• Modified Yoga poses and solutions to address acute pain
• Classical and Modified Yoga poses to decrease or relieve chronic pain
SUNDAY’S PROGRAM WILL INCLUDE:
• Defining asymmetries such as scoliosis, kyphosis, lordosis and more localized asymmetries such as spondylolysthesis, and flattened cervical spine (whiplash).
• Through lecture, demonstration and yoga practice understanding how we are all affected by even minor asymmetry in the body and learning to see and feel these asymmetries.
• How injuries and asymmetries affect the proprioceptive and nervous systems.
• Yogasana to align the spine and limbs to decrease pain, balance the use muscles and bones, and as a preventative against future injuries and pain.

Yoga for Back Care • Narberth Pranayama, or breath control is the most important principle of a yogic practice. It increases the Prana, or life force in our body, as well as refreshes the energetic systems, calms the mind and emotions, and purifies the body. Yet it is often not emphasized in modern asana classes. By really honing in on the breath, we can increase our oxygen capacity, deepening into our breath awareness and its effects on the entire system. In this workshop you will get deeper in touch with your breath, learn and practice several yogic breath techniques and see how they can effect and deepen your yoga practice during asana, and assist in meditation. Change your breath, change your mind. Pranayama: The Science of Breath • Narberth Come join us to experience how meditation nurtures self-discovery and restores a sense of calm, ease and well-being. You will be guided through the five essential practices of body scan, sitting, movement, walking and compassion meditation. We will also explore mindfulness through exercises to bring fuller awareness to simple daily activities. Mindfulness Meditation • Narberth The seat of our deepest power, our center of gravity, a meeting place with the base of our spine, our root and sacral chakras, the container of our reproductive and digestive organs, a fulcrum for locomotion and the top of our legs. This powerful place need not be a mystery! Through some anatomical and theoretical grounding, hands-on partnering, Asana and Pranayama practice we will explore the potential for stability, mobility, balance, support and freedom in the pelvis. There will be space and time for individual feedback and adjustments. Bring your questions and curiosity! All levels welcome.
